As well as organising calligraphy retreats, the Chaplaincy
supports other calligraphy programmes in this region. Amongst
these is the University of Sunderland’s Calligraphy
Research Initiative. The work of Manny Ling, Senior Lecturer
in the School of Arts, Design and Media, the CRI aims:

to promote contemporary calligraphy and lettering arts
* to extend the long tradition of learning and calligraphy
in the north east of England
* to generate understanding of the differing cultural roles
of calligraphy
* to facilitate dialogue between traditional processes and
new technologies
* to provide a centre for calligraphy research and postgraduate
study
* to promote wider access and education in the lettering
arts
In
July 2000 the CRI instigated a series of international masterclasses
and also curated the exhibition Beyond Words, to
which one of the Chaplaincy team contributed.
