As well as organising calligraphy retreats, the Chaplaincy
has supported other calligraphy programmes in this region.
Amongst these was the University of Sunderlands Calligraphy
Research Initiative (now International Research Centre for
Calligraphy). This continuing work is led by Dr Manny Ling,
Senior Lecturer, and Professor Ewan Clayton of the Faculty
of Arts, Design and Media. Its aims are:
*
to promote contemporary calligraphy and lettering arts
* to extend the long tradition of learning and calligraphy
in the north east of England
* to generate understanding of the differing cultural roles
of calligraphy
* to facilitate dialogue between traditional processes and
new technologies
* to provide a centre for calligraphy research and postgraduate
study
* to promote wider access and education in the lettering
arts
July
2000 saw the instigation of a series of international master-classes
and an exhibition Beyond Words, to which one of the
Chaplaincy team contributed.
Recent
initiatives include residencies, the development of post-graduate
degree courses and a website http://www.sunderlandscape.com/ircc/
