Applications for the 2008/9 Artist-in-Residence at Durham Cathedral (beginning 1 October 2008)

Artists working in the visual arts are invited to apply for this Residency, which provides the opportunity for an artist to assess their development and practice, during their time in Durham

Benefits include:

  • a fee of £17,000
  • a studio within the Cathedral precincts
  • subsidised living accommodation at St Chad's College, Durham. This includes full board during term time. A kitchen is available for the artist's use. The artist contributes one-third of the total cost. During the current year (2007-8) the artist's contribution is £1363.
  • the opportunity to teach in the School of Arts, Design, Media and Culture at the University of Sunderland. 30 days paid at VL rate. Teaching (or agreed collaboration) is arranged with Professor Eric Bainbridge, to reflect the particular strengths and interests of the artist appointed. The School is very well equipped and offers a wide range of programmes in art and design including fine art photography, glass and ceramics, design, performing arts and media studies at BA and MA levels
  • an appropriate form of introduction of the artist and her/his work to the staff and students at the University of Sunderland
  • an exhibition at the Reg Vardy Gallery and Durham Art Gallery at the end of the residency

The residential nature of this post is a major strength. The appointed artist will be expected to commit to residence in Durham for the full term of the residency. Existing commitments may be considered by the interviewing panel. Artists with extensive commitments already agreed elsewhere might consider applying in another year.

A typical applicant will be above the age of 25, be in possession of a good first degree - BA (Hons) in an Art and Design discipline (1 or 2i) - and is likely to have completed an MA course. The applicant will have participated in solo exhibitions outside of those associated with art education. This residency is not suitable for artists who have graduated from a BA course in the last three years.

The applicant will be able to demonstrate some continuous themes of exploration, and will be able to show that a sustained period of contact with their work will enable an evaluation of and continued development of their work. An ability to work on their own, directing their own time and endeavours, is essential.

The applicant will be able to communicate clearly and with enthusiasm to a range of students, as a part-time lecturer within the agreed programme.

Applicants are invited to submit:

  • a brief statement (no more than 250 words) on why they feel this residency is appropriate for them
  • a current curriculum vitae and a telephone number where they can be contacted
  • the names and addresses of two referees, one relating to professional practice
  • visual documentation of their work: either up to ten screen resolution jpegs of recent work (each clearly labelled and numbered in a folder with the artist's name, on a cd (formatted for mac and pc)), and an accompanying word document listing the jpegs with title, dimensions, date and artist's name, or audio and moving image work submitted on DVD or CD. This should be an appropriately edited showreel of approximately three minutes' duration, again with an accompanying word document listing the titles, duration, date and artist's name
  • a stamped and self-addressed envelope (or label) for the return of the visual and/or other documentation.

The administering body cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage of supporting material.

The interviewing panel is joined each year by a guest interviewer. The guest interviewer this year is Godfrey Worsdale, Director of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2008
Short listed candidates will be invited to Durham for an interview on 25/26 June 2008
Please note that travelling expenses for candidates selected for interview can only be paid for travel within the UK.

Applications should be sent to:
